Cellulite is a condition which causes lumps and dimples to appear on the surface of the skin.  The skin can be described as  having an “orange-peel” or “cottage-cheese” appearance when compared to ‘normal’ skin.

Cellulite is not a medical condition that requires treatment but rather a harmless condition which affects the aesthetics of an individual.  It can affect both men and women although is much more common in females.

Cellulite is caused by pockets of enlarged subcutaneous fat cells pushing against the connective tissue compartments of the skin.  These connective tissue compartments are comprised mainly of a substance called collagen, which is a tough and elastic substance providing stength and elasticity to the skin.

The pressure caused by the build-up of the enlarged fat cells causes the  fibrous bands of collagen in these skin compartments to weaken, affecting the structure and elasticity of the skin.

The combination of the enlarged fat cells and the weakening of the connective tissues in these fibrous bands causes a ‘puckering’ or ‘dimpling’ effect on the skin’s surface.
